It was fun to go back through so many projects and revisit their stories, and I’m so incredibly grateful to the casts and crews that have brought my stories to life.
Doing something like this makes you sit back and reflect on your work. When I’m deeply involved in production, I don’t reference another of my films or think about how they may connect. Upon viewing my reel though, there are definite themes that pop-out to me. In each one I wanted to say something about what I was going through at that time in my life. I guess this is why I’m not a nostalgic creator – once I’ve said it and worked through it – I’m done. On to the next.
“The Silent Nick and Nora” was written after a guy broke my heart. Thus “The Tale of the Heart Thief” and being set in a world where people literally have their hearts stolen. LOL! We’ve all been there, right? But I didn’t want that to be the end of the story, so Angelica goes on a search to get her heart back.
“Brother & Sister” I worked on when I wanted to stand on my own, and affirm that I’d follow my own creative path an no one else’s.
“The Jules Verne Project” I made when I really really wanted/needed to laugh. :)
And TITANIA is still a journey that is unfolding for me, but becoming clearer each day.
I think as a fictional narrative artist to be courageous I should tell my own stories. Even if it doesn’t look or sound like me. I see the news and the horrible plight of war refugees and do what I can through donating… but it also makes me think of my own heritage, being the grand-daughter of immigrants. I created “The Sleeping Emigrant” from that. It’s in part my great-grandmother’s tale, amended to reflect my own lessons and values, then set in the future. But it’s my own story. I’m grateful to the journalists and documentarists who are bringing us these stories from around the world, but then – how do I connect with more than just my eyes? And that’s where my art comes in. How are we “like” them – even if in the smallest way? I think the greatest hope for my work is that someone will sit in the audience and think, “I know what she means, I’ve been there…I’m connecting to this…inspired.”
The world is getting smaller and smaller. And there are so many important stories out there I want to know about. So, tell me p[lease, what is yours, and how do you tell it?
