“Let us celebrate the occasion with wine and sweet words.” – Plautus
Last summer I had the pleasure of collaborating on a photo series with two of my favorite people, fantasy authors Delia Sherman and Ellen Kushner. Spend any time with these two and you’ll walk away seeing the world a little more vibrantly. When I sit at a table with them, their conversation and ideas fill me as much as the food on my plate, if not more so. They have the most remarkable home filled with art and books and manuscripts and stories, lots of stories. The kitchen is kin to an alchemist’s athanor and there’s literally a secret passage in one of their walls! Imagination and song are certainly at home here. To take any of this away would be like having a bare pantry – so, I’ve used the notion quite literally and created a series on the nourishment of words, and what it is that truly feeds us.
I invite you to click on each photo (to make it larger) and look in their cabinets, read the bottles and search around for references to their stories. (You may even catch a glimpse of me disappearing into the hedge…) There’s a chair waiting for you, and Ellen and Delia are never short on great tales to tell.
This black & white photo of Ellen is actually a portrait of the two them together that, to me, speaks of how they inspire each other. Ellen is surrounded by words and wings and mermaid tails from Delia’s stories. A nice thing about books…you can always carry the author around with you.
Thank you Ellen and Delia for your inspiration and friendship – and for eating paper when I asked you to. I owe you a big, giant cake!
